THE ORDINARY ANTI-ACNE PRODUCTS
If there was one skincare ingredient we couldn't live without, it would be Vitamin A. This powerhouse active can assist in the visible signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture and tone.
The Ordinary offer six different Vitamin A serums, all of which have become incredibly popular. These serums are not only budget-friendly, but also vegan and cruelty-free:
But which one should you use? How are they different?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RETINOL AND RETINOID?
Retinoids are a family of skincare products that contain different forms of Vitamin A. Vitamin A, specifically retinoids, have been proven to reduce wrinkles by addressing their depth and size, rather than just superficially minimizing their appearance. Retinoids work in three ways: they stimulate collagen production to maintain skin firmness, neutralize free radicals that contribute to wrinkle formation, and enhance the skin's natural exfoliation process to improve texture, even out skin tone, and treat acne.
There are various forms of Vitamin A used in skincare, but for the purpose of this discussion, we will focus on two forms: retinol and granactive retinoid, which are used in The Ordinary Retinoid serums.
RETINOL
Retinol is the most common form of Vitamin A found in over-the-counter skincare products. It requires conversion into retinoic acid, its active form, to effectively combat wrinkles. The conversion process involves several steps, with retinol being closer to retinoic acid in terms of effectiveness and potential irritation. Retinol offers several benefits for the skin, including antioxidant properties that combat free radicals, acceleration of cellular turnover to reduce dark spots, wrinkles, and acne, and stimulation of collagen production. However, retinol can still cause irritation, dryness, and redness, especially for those with sensitive skin. It is recommended to start with the lowest concentration and gradually increase usage once the skin has adjusted.
GRANACTIVE RETINOID
Granactive retinoid, also known as Hydroxypinacolone Retinoid (HPR), is a form of retinoid that does not require conversion into retinoic acid to be effective. According to the manufacturer, granactive retinoid can effectively reduce wrinkles and dark spots without causing irritation. However, independent studies confirming this claim are currently lacking. Nevertheless, granactive retinoid is known to treat acne and melasma and is generally gentler on the skin compared to other forms of retinoids. It can be a suitable alternative for individuals with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate retinol.
WHICH ONE TO BUY?
The Ordinary offers a range of retinoid serums, each with different concentrations and formulations. It is important to note that all retinoids increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so they should be used at night and accompanied by generous sunscreen application during the day.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% In Squalane is the gentlest retinoid serum offered by the brand and is unlikely to cause irritations. It is recommended for individuals with sensitive, acne-prone skin who cannot tolerate other forms of Vitamin A.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% In Squalane is similar in formulation to the 2% version but contains a higher concentration of Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate. This serum can be considered if the 2% version has been used for a while without irritation and if stronger results are desired.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (previously Advanced Retinoid 2%) combines two forms of retinoids: Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate and encapsulated retinol. This emulsion is stronger than the Granactive Retinoids in Squalane and may cause irritation in sensitive skin. It is suitable for individuals who want a medium-strength retinoid serum that combines the benefits of both the new (Granactive Retinoid) and old (Retinol) generations of retinoids.
The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% In Squalane is a retinol-based serum that uses a mild concentration of retinol. It is a good choice for those who want to try retinol for the first time and prefer a formula with extensive research supporting its effectiveness.
The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% In Squalane has the same formulation as the 0.2% version but with a higher concentration of retinol. It is suitable for individuals who have used lower concentrations without side effects and want to upgrade to a stronger formula for faster anti-aging results.
The Ordinary Retinol 1% In Squalane is the most potent and effective among The Ordinary Retinoid serums. It contains 1% retinol, which translates into 0.5% retinoic acid. This serum is recommended for experienced retinoid users who have built up tolerance to lower concentrations. It is important to note that 1% retinol can be highly irritating, even with the presence of the moisturizing Squalane base.
In summary, when choosing a retinoid serum from The Ordinary, consider your skin's sensitivity and preferences. The Granactive Retinoids in Squalane are generally gentler, while the Retinol In Squalane offers a more researched and proven form of Vitamin A. The Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion combines both types for a balanced approach. Always start with the lowest concentration and gradually increase usage to allow your skin to adjust.
