AZELAIC ACID
Azelaic acid is a skincare ingredient that has gained popularity for its various benefits and versatility. It is a dicarboxylic acid that can be derived from natural sources such as grains, including wheat, barley, and rye. Azelaic acid is used in skincare products for its ability to address multiple skin concerns and promote overall skin health.
THE BENEFITS AND USES OF AZELAIC ACID IN SKINCARE
- ACNE TREATMENT: Azelaic acid has antimicrobial properties that help inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria on the skin. It can effectively reduce the formation of comedones (clogged pores), inflammatory acne lesions, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) associated with acne.
- HYPERPIGMENTATION AND MELASMA: Azelaic acid is effective in reducing hyperpigmentation, including melasma, a common skin condition characterized by dark patches on the face. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin coloration, and promoting a more even skin tone.
- ROSACEA MANAGEMENT: Azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. It can also help control the formation of papules and pustules, common symptoms of this chronic skin condition.
- ANTI-AGING EFFECTS: Azelaic acid has antioxidant properties that help neutralize free radicals, which can cause premature aging and damage to the skin. It promotes collagen synthesis, which can improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- SKIN BRIGHTENING: Regular use of azelaic acid can help brighten the skin and improve overall skin texture. It can address dullness and uneven skin tone, resulting in a more radiant complexion.
- MILD EXFOLIATION: Azelaic acid has a mild exfoliating effect on the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. This can result in smoother, clearer skin and can also help reduce the appearance of acne scars and blemishes.
WHAT DOES AZELAIC ACID DO?
Much like retinoids, there are several things that azelaic acid can do for your skin. From reducing redness and inflammation to minimizing blemishes, unclogging pores, and evening out your skin, it’s a real catch-all ingredient. Azelaic acid also improves the overall tolerance of your skin. So, if you’ve previously had issues with using retinoids, you may even be able to use them after using azelaic acid for a few months.
Azelaic acid is generally well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin. It is considered a gentle ingredient and is less likely to cause irritation compared to other acids, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. However, as with any skincare ingredient, it is recommended to perform a patch test before using azelaic acid for the first time to ensure compatibility with your skin.
Azelaic acid is available in different formulations, including creams, gels, and serums. It can be used as a targeted treatment or as part of a regular skincare routine. Incorporating azelaic acid into your skincare routine may help improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.
HOW TO USE AZELAIC ACID
More products do not equal a better result when it comes to active ingredients like azelaic acid, so start with a small amount. We recommend applying an azelaic acid serum the same way we would recommend any other serum. Start with a small amount (about a pea size) applied evenly over the face using the 13-dot technique. When you first start using your azelaic acid serum, apply it every other day, and gradually build up to a full pump of product, daily.
